Hello, I'm Richard Ager and welcome to NH Outlook. We are in room 100 of the State House, home to the Senate Finance and Ways and Means Committee. I'm not sure that the dust has settled here- for this was the week that no legislator look forward to. It was the deadline for the state budget to be voted on for the next two years.
Outcue; If we didn't solve this today, it would go on into the future and the end result might be a lot worse for all of us than what we're doing today.

Bite: Disk Two: 12:47:12 This is a budget that requires hard choices. And this is a budget that requires shared sacrifice.
Track: The thick granite walls of the legislature didn't keep out the chants from protesters upset about the budget.
Bite: Disk Two: 12:55:02 They don't care. They don't care.
Track: Some were angry about new taxes on LLC companies.
Bite: Disk Two: 12;53:00 They are finding taxes everywhere. I've been a small businessman in the state for 30 years. It's getting so hard to make ends meet it's unbelievable.
Track: Other demonstrators criticized Republican legislators who proposed across the board spending cuts - with no specific details.
Bite: Disk Two: 12:57:05 "Name your cuts"
Bite: Disk Two: 12:31:45 The hard choices are here. And they're not reflected any better than what we're hearing outside. We've had demonstrations asking us to spend more money; we've had demonstrations asking us to make more cuts. It's time for all of us, legislators and citizens alike, to live up to our talk of shared sacrifice as we deal with an unprecedented national downturn.
Track: One prominent Democrat - Senator Lou D'Allesandro - had been very specific in his budget proposal - expanded gambling - which was flatly rejected by the House in last week's committee of conference.
Bite: Disk Two: 13:22:49 In the final analysis, the one thing we didn't do was provide economic opportunity We refused to allow companies to come to NH and spend ¾ of a billion dollars in capital investment in improving facilities where expanded gaming could take place. We didn't allow for the creation of thousands of new jobs. We didn't do that.
Bite: Disk Two: 13:24:08 We missed the boat on giving carpenters, bricklayers, masons, jobs. Jobs.
Soundup: Bite: Disk Two: 12:49:05 D'Allesandro NO
Track: And so D'Allesandro voted against the Democratic-led budget, leaving Republican Senator Bob Odell as the vote needed to pass the budget.
Bite: Disk Two: 14:05:20 WAS IT TOUGH VOTING NON-PARTY LINE ON WHAT ENDED UP BEING A LARGELY PARTY-LINE VOTE? It was not easy and I'll tell you the reason is that this is a budget that nobody is cheering about. This was a tough budget in a tough time and I made up my mind that we had worked several months for this, we have asked people to take sacrifices in their benefits and services from the state; we have asked people to pay increased fees; that if we didn't solve this today, it would go on into the future and the end result might be a lot worse for all of us than what we're doing today.
